The Weekly List School Holiday Edition

buskers-birthday-NSCD

Well I’m a little slow here in the blogging world at the moment. With easter and the girls birthdays falling over the busy school holiday period, I’ve had very little time to sit down at my laptop long enough to check my emails and catch up with my instagram feed let alone put together something to pop into your inboxes.

I did have a chance however to take a whole lot of snap happy pictures. The holidays are always a time to capture some great moments, and with MB and MD heavily caught up enjoying the moment, I saw it as a great way to steal some precious shots to paste into a photo album.

I do also have a post in the works to recap the awesome events and everything that went down for Miss6-who’s-now-7 and also for Baby Viv who’s now 1. Oh my gosh, where did the months from tiny baby to walking toddler go? So stay tuned for more!

Today I’m sharing with you a collection of photographs and amazing finds from across the web in recent days. Some crafty, some foodie, some beautiful and some funny.

Enjoy-NSCD

This Friday I’m loving:

The opening photo of some buskers in the park providing some great entertainment as we celebrated Miss7’s birthday.

It’s school holidays here and families are buckled down battling kids among a frantic house, this is a gentle reminder to let kids be kids. Let them be messy, let them get dirty and let there be mess from nanny blogger They’re Not My Kids.

These lovely DIY embellished hand-made cards are absolutely beautiful. I pinned these to my craft board on Pinterest the second I saw them and swooned over them so much that I decided to make them myself. They were great personally gifted cards for the girls.

The Twins turn 12 today. Hooray, bring on the pre-teen stage! They’ve requested a Brownie Cake which is perfect timing seeing as it’s overflowing with easter eggs chez moi. This Mint Chocolate Brownie recipe from Bake Play Smile is top of the to-do list along with melting down some Cadbury eggs to add to the gooey mix of chocolate goodness.

18 years of school, and now I’m an over-educated Nanny is a fascinating article about the struggle between choosing a career out of choice and love and choosing a career that pays the bills.

This post from Freddie’s Food about battling on with the baby who won’t eat. Fussy eaters are a well-known problem in the nanny household. The Twins don’t like to touch anything except for Nutella sandwiches and fresh fruit, Miss7 will only eat plain pasta and ravioli and Baby Viv will eat only what she can feed herself. Sometimes meal planning can be a real challenge but this healthy eating & sustainability oriented blog helps keep me feeling like I’m not alone.

This heavenly delicious Honey Apple Bread has been on high rotation in the nanny household lately and reminds me of my family’s Dutch Apple Cake. Sophie Hansen of Local Is Lovely is a blog I’ve been following long before I became a blogger and is a constant source of luscious photos, fresh recipes and happy families.

Norah Colvin never fails to evoke inspiration and continues to urge me to do better and to be better with the kids. The magic effect – why children need books is a perfect reminder about why we shouldn’t forgo this activity with our kids, even if we’re busy or late to bedtime.

This bloggers brunch in Melbourne is happening next week and Nanny Shecando is going. All kinds of excitement going on here at the moment.. no words!

Do I need a Nanny or a Babysitter? And what’s an Au Pair? The Australian Nanny Association has a great article to break it down for you!

Finally, these Anzac biscuits will keep you going for the rest of the weekend after an early start at the Dawn Service this morning.

Sidewalk Pavement Drawing With Micador Easter Egg Chalk

easter, kids, drawing, 2014, nanny life

Phew, my oh my, the month of April is just flying by isn’t it? I don’t know about you, but our house always goes into over drive as the end of term approaches. I don’t know why the school has to schedule everything at the same time, but they do and it sure challenges my organisational skills.

We’ve had the craziness of end of term parties and friday fun days; coincidentally I consumed a lot of wine that night as reward for surviving the school term. We’ve had Easter bonnet parades at school; of course I’m now subsequently recovering from hot glue gun wounds as I burnt the midnight oil in attempt to finish Miss6’s Easter hat. And The Twins have been nervously undergoing auditions for the high school musical whilst also preparing for their yearly ballet exams. Naturally I got the task of helping them learn their lines. Of course this wouldn’t have been so bad if the school wasn’t actually doing High School Musical this year. Yes, the high school is doing High School Musical, amusing isn’t it.. A few days in I no longer thought so!

The Easter school holiday is always a busy time for the family. We take on extra ballet activities and begin the equestrian season, we carefully divide the holidays into fair amounts of time for The Twins to go harmoniously between mum’s house and dad’s house, and we also celebrate all of the girls birthdays in the space of 7 days. Yes, you read that right. Amongst the holiday period of Easter and Anzac day, along with numerous public holidays, each girl celebrates their birthday within a few days of the other.

As I’m sure you can appreciate, this is a logistical nightmare for Boss Mum and myself to navigate. It takes the combined efforts of our organisational skills to map out the specifics of which days The Twins will be with us and which days they’ll be at their mum’s (one of the components of having a blended family). To also foresee which days are public holidays and to schedule birthday parties around these days (whilst remembering that most school friends will have gone away for the holidays). And of course, with the birthdays colliding with the Easter long weekend and Anzac Day public holiday, it means we must also order gifts ahead of time. This is so we don’t find ourselves standing outside the Post Office at 5.05pm on thursday evening before the long weekend. Unfortunately, our organisational skills failed us and I did find myself banging on the door of the Post Office yesterday evening desperately hoping that the post office lady would take pity and allow me to collect the last of Miss6’s presents. Sadly she didn’t and with today being a public holiday and Miss6’s birthday falling on a Saturday this year, I must now squeeze in a last minute trip to the shops tomorrow morning to pick up a substitute gift. Quelle dommage!

What’s more, Miss6 (soon to be 7) still believes in the Easter bunny. I don’t know how we’ve managed to keep her sheltered from the hurtful school kids intent on ruining the magic, but I’m so happy that we have. Given that I’m all about holding on to the magic in life and living peter pan style, I’m a big supporter in going to great lengths to create a truly magical Easter experience. I’m also aware that this will most likely be the last year we get away with this. Although I am happy that we’ll get to rekindle the magic in a few years once Baby Viv is a bit older. And so in addition to organising the birthdays and surviving the school holidays with restless kids and lovely but slightly over-bearing grandparents, I’ve also been attempting to help the Easter Bunny arrange an Easter egg hunt of epic proportions. Stay tuned for the follow up post next week!

I picked up a few craft activities whilst I was out doing some last minute shopping at the party store this week. I had thought they might prove successful in coaxing the kids away from the television for longer than an hour or so. It’s a tough ask isn’t it, I know you struggle with this as well! Which is why I had to pinch myself yesterday evening when I find myself happily sitting out on the pavement, my coffee going cold. It went cold because I was so caught up in watching the artwork the girls were creating that I preferred to get in on the action as opposed to sitting to enjoy the quiet.

In the nanny life, some days really stand out as memorable ‘pinch me’ moments. Moments in where I can’t believe I could be lucky enough to do the job I do. Of course there are the other days, those horrible bad days that leave you wondering why you’re in this mess. But you forget about those pretty quickly. Because it’s days like yesterday, afternoons where a simple box of this early stART Easter Egg shaped chalk by Micador transform your kids into giggling, smiling, creative artists. Kids whom are happy to spend their entire afternoon outside in the sunshine and thank you for letting them do the coolest activity ever that make it all worth it.

So whilst I’m still riding my high from yesterday’s memorable day in the nanny life, I’m off to wrap presents, to continue my exploits in the kitchen to finish the birthday cakes (why I volunteered to make the birthday cakes I don’t know) and to sketch out some colourful painted signs and decorations to accompany the epic Easter egg hunt. From myself and all the kids here at the Nanny Shecando family, Happy Easter!

Have you gone away on holiday this Easter? Do your kids still believe in the Easter Bunny? Do you have a go-to ‘get the kids out of the house’ activity?

Nanny Shecando Is Hosting A #nannylifewednesday Link Party

Hello lovely! Guess what, I have big news to share with you.

Firstly, to my friends in Australia, I hope you’re enjoying the beautiful autumn weather in the lead up to winter. I know I am, scarves and light winter jackets are always welcome in my wardrobe. To my special American and European friends, well I hope you’re finally getting the chance to enjoy some much needed warmer weather. I know you had a pretty intense winter that seemed as though it might never end! To my fellow nannies, I’m glad you can now take joy in being able to get the frustrated and cooped up kids out of the house to let loose with that pent up energy.

I’ve been a little absent from the blog lately. I really wasn’t kidding when I said I had a way to help you become more time rich. See, you can hold me to my word! Theres been much to do behind the scenes here at Nanny Shecando, lots of planning and talks about where we’re going in the next few months and how to make the idealistic plans a reality. Exciting things to come! There’s also been some design work happening intermittently to the appearance of the site. Do you like it?

Today I’m very excited to announce the first of many new things to come for Nanny Shecando. The blog will be hosting a weekly #nannylifewednesday Link Up Party. Yay, let’s all have a party!

nannylifewednesday-linkparty-NSCD

This link up party is something I’ve wanted to initiate for a while. Because as I’ve said before, here and here, being a nanny is a very rewarding career but it’s also a career that’s isolating. For many of us, long drawn out days are spent communicating solely with children. Yes at times we get to have a chat with the school mums on occasion, and yes the daily conversations with children are hilarious and amusing, but it can be limiting and at times leave you craving grown up conversation with someone over the age of six. And to be realistic, there’s not a lot of opportunity to achieve this. As I’m sure you know, whether you’re a nanny, or a babysitter, or a homeschooling parent, or a teacher, or a stay at home mum, or a stay at home dad, work colleagues are hard to come by. Believe me, I’ve tried. Apart from the kids, my work colleagues consist of the cat and the dog and the only time they get chatty is when they want something from me. Like food.

So I’ve created this #nannylifewednesday link up party in the hopes that those of us working in similar industries can connect with each other. It can be a way to forge friendships, to share ideas, to benefit from the connections made with others, to commiserate, to congratulate, to support and to help. It’s open for anyone to join (if you have a blog), with a very easy and flexible theme being kids.

But What If I’m Not A Blogger?

A link up party is an online meeting where fellow bloggers connect and share their articles together in the one place on a flexible or set topic as outlined by the host. Sadly, that means some of you who don’t have blogs will be unable to share. However, you can still benefit by joining in and reading the articles and as always your comments and social media presence is always welcome, enjoyed and very much appreciated. Plus, if you feel that you really would love to participate, despite not having a blog, please email me at hope@nannyshecando.com as I am currently on the hunt for guest bloggers.

For more information please read the details below and check out the #nannylifewednesday link up page on the blog. I hope to see you there on April 30 for a party. P.S. I’ll bring the bubbles!

  • thoughts on child development and education
  • your experiences in the nannylife

Holey Moley Gooey Chocolate Brownies

chocolatebrownies11-NSCD

Today I’m sharing this decadent chocolate brownie recipe. In the nanny family, these brownies are a bit like how I’m addicted to coffee. Meaning they can’t go without them for long. Not only do all three kids request I make them every few days, so do Boss Mum and Dad.

Recipe: ‘Holey Moley’ Gooey Chocolate Brownies

Actually, these Chocolate Brownies also rate pretty highly on the boyfriend’s list of requests. Although to be honest, so do berry muffins, apple tarts, banana bread, fresh-baked bread, a solid man’s dinner every night and if I had time to make him lunch everyday, he wouldn’t complain either. So, scratch that. I’ve not got three kids requesting these, but four.

Personally I’ve never been a huge fan. I’m not saying I don’t like them and never eat them, because that would be a lie. Just that I’m more inclined to munch on the chocolate buttons (hello, chocolate!) before they end up in the pot melting into treacle-like goodness with the creamy butter. The result is this rich, gooey sludge that looks like heaven on earth. I’m sure you know what I’m talking about.

The best part of baking is the quality control! #tastetest #foodie

Click To Tweet

When the kids jump up on a stool and help stir the pot, both literally and figuratively sometimes, they get this dreamy look on their faces that I imagine freshly washed dogs get at the sight of dirt and grass. They just have to roll around in it.

The skeleton of this recipe is originally inspired from this Kids Choc Brownies recipe I found on Kidspot long ago. Although I think it’s fair to say that after many years of improvising with whichever ingredients I could rustle up from the pantry at short notice, these gooey chocolate brownies have gradually become my own.

chocolatebrownies2-NSCD  chocolatebrownies3-NSCDchocolatebrownies4-NSCD

The best part of this recipe is that its super quick and easy to do. Most times I find myself making these gooey chocolate brownies late in the afternoon at the request and insistence of the girls. They’ll usually help out which saves on time but also means that they kitchen looks as though a flower bomb just hit.

In reality, I make these one-handed with a baby on my hip, with a pot of spaghetti on the stove for dinner, with school lunches for the next day laid out ready to go, with a puppy scratching at the bench going crazy for chocolate and most likely completing some form of school homework.

If that doesn’t convince you how easy it is to whip up, I don’t know what will!

Behind The Scenes With Hope Of Nanny Shecando

nannyshecando, norah, blog, awards, liebster, grateful

Questions from Norah Colvin

A little while ago I was surprised to find out that Norah Colvin, of her self titled blog, had nominated me for a Liebster Blog award. Norah writes a blog about education and the process in which both adults and children learn, is particularly interested in philosophy for children, and has a knack for flash fiction! You can see her blog

[button url=”http://norahcolvin.com”]here[/button]

From what I understand and have since experienced, the Liebster Award is intended to promote communication between bloggers, to recommend blogs and to provide encouragement to blogs with a smaller following. With this purpose, I am rather chuffed to be an award recipient. The Nanny Shecando Blog was initially created to provide an outlet to share the #nannylife with my friends and family. It began with my two most loyal readers: my mother and my grandmother, and some days they are still my only readers. Then again I’m not the greatest pen pal so I can’t blame them for getting their communication however they can!

Over the past few months I have invested more time and effort into the Nanny Shecando blog. This is because I’ve come to enjoy the process and the interaction with you (my readers), but also as I continue to see potential for continued growth in the future. However, despite my grandiose plans, at the end of the day it is a hobby and something I greatly enjoy. If after sometime my mother and grandmother are still my only loyal readers then so be it, I shall continue to enjoy the process. And so I am thankful to be the recipient of this award by the lovely Norah Colvin ‘paying it forward’. It serves as a little pat on the back for recognition of effort. Speaking of hobbies, what I enjoy, and grandiose life plans, Norah has posed some great questions in something of a candid interview.

So here’s an insight into the world of Hope as part of Nanny Shecando and the #nannylife. I’m talking the meaning of life and the ‘big’ questions (I was stumped by these) mixed with the contents of my handbag. Because well, why not! If you would like to read more about Nanny Shecando and the purpose of this blog, please visit the About page. For more info on the kids and their funny stories that feature prominently within, visit The Family.

I value most in life // the chance I get everyday to make the most of it. That I can do whichever I chose to do, and do it knowing I have every possibility to succeed so long as I put my mind to it. On a more tangible level, I value the love and support I receive from my close friends and family. I know that it wouldn’t be the same beautiful existence if we couldn’t share it with one another.

The activities I most enjoy // is to cook and spend time in the kitchen. Although to be honest, I enjoy any activity that allows me to be creative. I find that by using my hands to mould and craft and create serves as the best method to manage a busy, yet fulfilling life.

I wish I had more time // to read more books. Not just to be able read a few pages at night in the vain hope that I’ll remember what I read the next day. But to devote hours lounging with a good page turner is an absolute dream and something that I look forward to working to achieve this year. In fact, the main goal I set for 2014 was to find the time (and mental capacity) to read more and to play the violin more.

A change to make in the world // I guess I’d really like to see more people holding themselves accountable for their actions. It’s so easy to get caught up in routine and to simply follow suit that we also don’t effectively consider the long overriding aftermath of our actions. To be able to stop and analyse our decisions before we make them, to critically think about cause and effect, would go a long way to help easing many of our mostly self-made problems within society.

Something to change about myself // is to practice a, you’re full of greatness so long as you tap into it and utilise it mentality. I’m working to change my tendency to ‘stress out a lot’ into the ability to have considered all potential avenues and to be prepared for every outcome.

The unexpected ‘goodness’ // in my life is that I am able to be so happy, comfortable, confident and secure in leading the life that I do. I feel it’s as simply put as that.

Pondering the big question // is similar to the ‘what’s your hopes and dreams’ question asked by your guidance counsellor in high school. The answer is supposedly going to define the rest of your life and in that very moment your mind has drawn a blank. However, tackling the big why questions with Miss6 recently, we did discuss the notion of life vs the state of dreaming. How can we really distinguish which is which? How do we know if what we perceive to be real is actually so? What’s to say we’ll wake up in 40 years time and all of this has been a dream. Would it be a problem if that was the case, was our ‘life’ lived whilst dreaming satisfying enough? I’m not sure of the answers so I guess I’m still pondering this at the moment.

Further Reading: Miss6 and her curiousness for ‘Why’ questions

I’m amused by // the daily conversations that I get to share with the kids. Their observations and perspectives towards experiences are truly enlightening, and at other times wholeheartedly amusing.

I like to collect // books and old sheet music. Garage sales, markets and op-shops are treasure troves I trawl regularly in search of the next addition to my growing bookshelf collection. It’s often an eclectic taste; from the classics to the light-hearted romance, to outstanding children’s tales, to the odd self-help meditative type read. In my dream home (in my dream life) there is a library full of books and a dusty piano in the corner.

If I could talk with anyone // I would reconnect with an old friend. In our teens we had this great friendship that came to an abrupt ending. We met by chance whilst both living in Europe and immediately formed a friendship. A few years later back in Australia, and after an oddball friendship we went our separate ways. If given the chance I’d love to be able to sit down over coffee together, if only to fill in the blanks.

I can’t do without // a notebook and pen. They’re packed into an already over flowing handbag amongst the array of baby dummies, spare nappies, yoghurt squeezies, half-eaten snickers bars, iPhone chargers, teddy bears, unused makeup, nail polish, spare clothes, colouring pencils and jewellery. I’m sure you’re not surprised to hear this. A woman’s handbag is a mess at the best of times without adding a baby/6year old combo to the mix. I also can’t do without coffee. It helps me transfer the overflowing thoughts from my mind to the pen and paper in my bag. Funnily enough, I could do without my rushed, scattered handwriting as it then makes it challenging to organise my penned thoughts into something fit for audience consumption.

The ‘take-away’ on life // is a tricky one. I often think that perhaps I’m yet to learn the key to life. Or perhaps it’s simply too early to tell. I find that I can be really on a roll with ‘life’. I’ll be enjoying, succeeding, learning and making my mark and then suddenly a curve ball will come out of left field. It’ll bowl me over and leave me wondering what on earth I’m doing and how I honestly thought I was on to a good thing. It’s the moments after, and the steps we take to pick ourselves up and carry on that truly matter. I suppose that’s the key right there, in defining what happens next. I do try to remember, and implement daily, something a dear friend of mine told me: that you don’t get anything unless you ask for it. So in other words, put yourself out there!

There you have it, thank you Norah for the chance to indulge. As an aside, I’ve chosen not to continue with the thread of the Liebster award. But please do go along and visit some of the other great recipients. There’s some high quality tips, tricks, pictures, writing and philosophical thoughts contained within. You can visit Norah’s post here for more details on the recipients.

What big questions are you pondering? And what’s the contents of your handbag/nanny bag look like?
